DIY Beauty

THOUGH THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY IS CERTAINLY A BOOMING ONE (AMERICANS SPEND $700 MILLION IN NAIL POLISH PRODUCTS ALONE EACH YEAR), IT HASN’T ALWAYS BEEN. BACK IN THE DAY, WOMEN HAD TO GET A LITTLE CRAFTY AND CREATE MAKESHIFT BEAUTY PRODUCTS. YOU PROBABLY HAVE THESE SUPPLIES TUCKED AWAY IN A CABINET OR FRIDGE AT HOME—GIVE THEM A SECOND LIFE BY DIYING SOME BEAUTY BUYS AND SAVE SOME SERIOUS CASH.

Baby Oil

Makeup wipes have always been marketed as one of the more responsible beauty products to purchase—it’s universally agreed that you should remove all makeup before going to bed to help your skin naturally renew itself while you sleep. But with the recent news that makeup wipes can take up to 100 years to break down in a landfill, how are we supposed to take care of ourselves and our planet? One simple quick fix is replacing makeup wipes with baby oil. It’s gentle enough to apply to your face daily, even on sensitive areas like your eyes. Plus, unlike traditional makeup wipes, baby oil will leave your face feeling soft and refreshed.

Basil

This culinary staple ingredient packs a serious acne-fighting punch. It contains powerful antioxidant properties, which help stop the spread of the bacteria that causes acne. Crush basil up into a paste, mix with water, and swab onto affected areas with a cotton ball. Make yourself some tea and relax with the paste on your face to let the basil work its magic, then rinse off no more than 5 minutes after application. Plus, basil is known to improve your mental health and memory, so by using this face wash you'll be doing both your mind and your body a favor. Repeat every other day for clear pores!

Egg Whites

Want to jump on the sheet mask bandwagon the old-fashioned way? Egg whites have long been used as a natural skin-tightener. Mix them with honey and West Village Essential Oil (available in Chamomile, Tangerine, Tee Tree, and Cedarwood, and more starting at $3), and apply to face as your own DIY face mask. Remember to keep egg whites out of areas like your eyes and mouth, as consuming uncooked eggs is bad news!
