It seems silly to spend so much money gifting "wants" during the holiday season when there are so many in need around the world. This year, when giving to friends and family, think about also helping others. Here are our top picks of gifts that give back for the wellness minded, beauty addict, fitness enthusiast and foodie that help a handful of noteworthy causes around the globe.
Even as a veteran beauty editor, I find product labels confusing. Since the FDA doesn't regulate the term "natural," shopping for clean beauty buys is one of the trickiest tasks. I partnered with New Beauty to produce and host this video on "How to Shop for Clean Beauty Buys" in hopes it'll help you cut through the clutter. Well, at least some of it! Check it out and let me know what you think.
In my latest for Well + Good, I spoke with a makeup artist to find out the must-have ingredients to look for in our under eye concealers. Turns out, they're so moisturizing they double up as actual eye cream. Check out the story and my picks here.
Scrolling through your Facebook feed, you’ve probably seen videos of people painfully peeling off their face mask and telling you not to embark on that experience. They’ve probably scared you from wanting to try one, but don’t give up just yet. We have found three peel-off face masks that were easy to use and left us with smoother, brighter skin.
Exfoliating your face is a crucial step in your regimen. However, the wrong method of exfoliation can do more harm than good. In fact, it can send your complexion in an extreme direction, making oily skin even oilier and dry skin even drier. Check out my latest for Well + Good on How to Exfoliate for Your Skin Type.
Halloween is right around the corner. Have you thought about what you're going to dress up as? If you're anything like us, then you're probably going to stick with a classic costume and turn it up a notch. Here, we chose the best lipsticks that go with the most iconic costumes (think Marilyn red). The best part? Each shade can be added into your makeup bag – permanently.
I loved putting this New York Live segment together. How often do you see people trying to sell beauty products on Facebook? While they may seem pushy, many of them are selling truly effective products and as entrepreneurs it's their job to be a bit pushy. In this segment, I cut through the clutter and found the best selling products from the top brands out there. Enjoy the segment!
I first met Cait about ten years ago when I was a beauty editor at Cosmopolitan magazine. At the time she was a beauty editor at Life & Style, and I looked up to her as she seemed to have it all figured out. She's always been supportive of my freelance career and I'm incredibly proud of what she's accomplished during the past few years. Now a cancer survivor, Cait utilized her relationships in beauty and personal experience to help others fight their battles while looking and feeling their best by writing "Pretty Sick: The Beauty Guide for Women with Cancer." At her book launch party, she said, "This was never about me writing a book. This was about me wanting to help others." And that's exactly the type of person Cait is – selfless. Here, she speaks to her journey and gives valuable life advice.
For two weeks after my chemical peel, my skin was super high maintenance. These are the products that helped to calm and heal my skin as well as show face in public.
Thanks to my on-going battle with hyperpigmentation, bi-yearly moderate peels have become part of my skincare regimen. I've been fighting hyperpigmentation since what seems like the beginning of time (or more truthfully, since I learned what the brown spots on my face were back when I worked at Cosmo). For me, it's 100% from the sun. While I used to bake in tanning beds when I was young (I was an idiot), as soon as I became an beauty editor (over a decade ago), I've been shunning the sun or at least slathering my skin in SPF and being diligent about reapplying. No matter how careful and mindful I am, the hyperpigmentation always comes back. Therefore, after the summertime, I always do a good peel as a jumpstart to a new skincare regimen with a focus on lightening.
One of my favorite things about working with New York Live is shooting field segments with Joelle Garguilo. She's full of positive energy, a real hustler and we just have the best time on set together. While we've shot many beauty segments together in the past, this was by far the most fun. I'm so grateful to be able to work with people who inspire me. Check out our latest featuring new express treatments in NYC.
Overnight masks are genius, because they take little to no effort. When I first received this Overnight Recovery Mask from Exuviance, I placed it in my "must try" basket in my bathroom along with about eight other face masks. (They're my favorite products to test!) Now, I use it once to twice per week and wake up with simply refreshed skin.
I feel extremely fortunate to have grown up during a time without the Internet and everything that comes with it. Remember before we were on AIM, before we had cell phones and before carefully crafting our MySpace profiles, things were a lot simpler. We actually had to wait by our phones if we were expecting a call, and I don't know about you, but I loved recording my voicemail with the help of Gwen Stefani. Back then, Cosmopolitan magazine was the authority for my friends and I and MTV music videos were the ultimate form of entertainment. It's amazing how much has changed in really, so little time.

You may have caught me live this morning discussing my favorite beauty trends for fall straight from the runways with Sara Gore and Jacquie Reed for NBC's New York Live, but incase you missed it, here's the scoop and product details are after the jump. Oh, and tomorrow I'll be on a new national show, DailyMail TV discussing a hot health topic. Be sure to tune in!
In my first column for AhaLife's The Good Guide, a reader asked, "What anti-aging ingredient should I be looking out for?" Immediately, one ingredient came to mind that topped all of the rest. I’ve been a beauty editor for over ten years now and watched as ingredient trends came and went, but there’s one anti-aging powerhouse that’s remained consistent: retinol. Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A that helps speed up cellular turnover in order to help even out discoloration, boost collagen, rid acne and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Beauty companies have been loyal to the ingredient by placing it in night creams for decades. Read the rest of my response here.
I'm excited to share that I'm now a columnist for AhaLife's The Good Guide. As a beauty and wellness journalist and expert, I partnered with the brand to create an "Ask Jeannine" series and will be answering all of your questions monthly. From skincare ingredients to fitness routines and acaí bowl recipes, bring it on! Check out my interview here and first column in response to the question, "What Anti-Aging Ingredient Should I Be Looking Out For?" Stay tuned for more of "Ask Jeannine!"
Cleansing with a gadget is almost imperative these days. Studies prove that the sonic technology helps to remove dirt and makeup better than simply washing your face with your hands alone. When PopSonic's Leaflet landed on my desk, I was immediately intrigued, because I never saw a facial cleansing device without a brush head. This travel sized gadget is completely made out of silicone. After putting it to the test, I found it was gentle, yet effective and good news – it's available on QVC this Friday, but you can enter now to win one before it launches. Here's the scoop.
Since it's National Hair Loss Awareness Month, let's get real about our hair. Born with extremely fine hair (and not a lot of it), I understand the insecurities that come along with having a sparse coif and often wear tape-in extensions to make my hair appear fuller on TV. We all have our security blankets, right? According to the ADA, an estimated 30 million women in the US are affected by hereditary hair loss. So what do you do if you're finding yourself to be part of this statistic? I have an answer.
EVE LOM's new campaign, "Glow on the Go," encourages even the busiest women to take the time to pamper themselves daily in order to get the skin they crave. We were inspired so we rounded up our top tips on how to make the quest for glowing skin part of your daily routine.
So much goodness has landed on my desk this month that I have to share my favorites with you. While some of them haven't officially hit store shelves yet, you can get your hands on others now.
One of the biggest trends I've notice throughout the past few years is the merger of the beauty and wellness industries and I couldn't be happier about the shift. It's changed not only the content I cover, but also, just like you, my personal shopping habits. We now care, drastically, about what each ingredient is doing for us in our skincare. I love that part of my job is to help you cut through that clutter, which is why I wanted to introduce you to ShortList, a new skincare brand that landed on my desk and is now part of my regimen.
We're used to seeing moisturizing ingredients like shea or cocoa butter in our skin and hair products, but Almond milk is becoming a key ingredient in the beauty industry because of its long list of skin benefits. here are three of our favorite buys embracing the trend.
Whether it's a sultry red, rosé inspired pink or a seasonal neutral, we're sharing our favorite natural lipstick brands in honor of National Lipstick Day on July 29th. Believe it or not, throughout your lifetime, you'll unintentionally consume about seven pounds of lipstick through regular use. Enough of a reason to give these a try.
I love discovering new, indie beauty brands that really cut through the clutter. As a beauty writer for the past ten years, I'm hard to impress, but when I see something different, I have to get my hands on it. I first discovered Tréstique at the Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) product demonstration last month. It was one of the few highlighted indie beauty brands that I stopped to learn about. Now, I have their sticks and crayons in all of my bags.
Last Friday I had the pleasure of sharing my summer travel must haves on NBC's New York Live TV. It's always so much fun to work with Jacque Reid and Joelle Garguilo. I've been a beauty contributor to the show now for over seven years, so it's fun, comfortable and the NY Live team feels like family. These are the items I've been toting around to Key West and the Jersey Shore this summer. The hair sheets smell as good as we say! Click here to watch.
When I first learned about WELL WITHIN skincare, I was impressed, simply because it was so clean. Then, I had the pleasure of meeting Co-founders, Lynne Florio and Renee Tavoularis, and fell in love with their mission. As beauty industry veterans (they both worked for La Prairie for over 20 years), their wellness journeys lead them to take a leap of faith and run with a vision. As an entrepreneur myself, I understand what it takes to bring a passion to life. Here, Lynne (LF) and Renee (RT) talk about starting the company, the best advice they've ever gotten and their definitions of beauty.
A manicure and blowout in 45 minutes? Yes, please! When Studio MB45 invited us in, I couldn’t be more excited to give this star treatment a try. MB45 streamlines your pampering where they give you a chic manicure and hairdo by two trained professionals in one efficient appointment. In the fast-paced setting that is New York City, the idea of simultaneous services is genius.
If you follow me on Instagram, then you might have seen my story about my magical experience on a press trip with Farmacy Beauty. We toured Co-Founder, Mark Veeder's, 7-acre lush property in Forestburgh, NY and then went to the farm where their hero ingredient is harvested in Damascus, PA. You know I've always been a fan of natural skincare, but seeing first hand how the ingredients are nourished for efficacy made me appreciate it even more.
